Canapes for the Kitties/ The Clark Gable and Carole Lombard Murder Case/ Black Diamond
By VariousCanapés for the Kitties by Marian Babson
-The cat's out of the bag: dead bodies are piling up in Brimful Coffers, a picturesque English village. Among the deceased is Boswell, a pet white rat. His killers were caught: Had-I and But-Known, two mischievous felines belonging to Lorinda Lucas, mystery writer. Unfortunately, the other victims were all too human-and their killer remains at large...
The danger in Brimful Coffers was unforeseen when several authors created an informal writers' colony in this lovely town outside of London. In act, the location was heaven until the undesirables-critics and scholars-began to show up. Soon Lorinda and her friends feel as if they're living in a fishbowl. Worse, they're getting chilling threats, supposedly from their fictional characters! But when fatal "accidents" begin to claim the colony's residents, death isn't make-believe. And unless Lorinda can sniff out the killer, even a cat's nine lives might not be nearly enough...
The Clark Gable and Carole Lombard Murder Case by George Baxt
-As Gone With the Wind approaches release, all the stars but Clark Gable prepare to head for Atlanta for the big premiere. Clark and his wife, Carole Lombard, are too distressed to celebrate the opening of the biggest movie of his career because Lydia Austin, a young actress and a protege of Carole's, is missing. In fact, kidnapping paranoia is sweeping through Hollywood, and even with body-building bodyguards like the two Clark has hired to protect Carole, no one feels safe. But Carole is not a dame to take such threats lying down. Convinced that they can help, she and Clark set themselves up as amateur sleuths. Of course, there are plenty of other celebrities in the mix: W.C. Fields alternates between anxiety over the kidnappings and trying to convince David O. Selznick that he should play Rhett Butler, and Groucho Marx also gets serious (just barely) long enough to worry about the missing girl, who is his current paramour.
Black Diamond by Susan Holtzer
In exchange for some missed class notes, University of Michigan student and sports reporter Zoe Kaplan agrees to drive drab dorm-mate Clare Swann to her eccentric late aunt's estate for the sorting of her possessions. When the will is read, Clare is handed the mysterious "Black Diamond," a porcupine quill-covered black box filled with seemingly meaningless mementos.
But when Zoe and Clare return to Clare's dorm after a trip to the library, they find the place ripped apart, the Black Diamond missing, and a man with a gashed throat lying dead on Clare's floor-a a man whom Clare recognizes as her father, assumed dead years ago. Enlisting her friend, clear-minded computer expert beneath the layers of a logging family's dark past-and into a present rife with murderous ambition.
