Granta 147 will be our Fortieth Birthday Special. This will be a celebratory issue featuring a collection of the best essays and fiction from the magazine's lauded history. It's 1979. The Soviet Union invades Afghanistan, China introduces its one-child policy, Margaret Thatcher is elected as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and an old Cambridge student magazine is relaunched. This special edition marks Granta's 40th birthday by bringing together some of its best writing from the past forty years. In this special, celebratory issue of Granta, we will be republishing a selection of our favourite pieces from the magazine's distinguished archive, along with a selection of letters and photographs from behind the scenes.
