Pinocchio The Story of a Marionette by C. Collodi and Aesop's Fables - Great Books for Children

By

The story of Pinnochio was written in 1880 by Carlo Lorenzini, who adopted the name of the village in which he lived as a pseudonym. He wrote many books under the pen name C. Collodi, but the best known is the classic, Pinocchio.
Pinochio was apparently first translated into English and published in the United States in 1892. Ever since then it has held a high place in the affections of American children.
It is so simple that even young boys and girls can understand it, and so full of interest that an adult will enjoy reading it also.
It seems fitting that Italy, with her rich tradition of puppetry, should have given boys and girls this treasure of a book. puppet shows were almost as common in Italy in Collodi's day as movies and TV shows are in the United States today.
No Childs book of the nineteenth century in any country is more completely on a child's level than the story of the little marionette who does many naughty things and suffers dire punishment, but who always comes out on top.
The humor of Pinocchio delights and satisfies the young reader as few other classics do, for it is the child's kind of humor.
The present edition was made from one of the first translations printed in England, and contains some incidents that are not found in other versions of the story.

The Fables of Aesop were first printed by William Caxton of London in 1484. The origin of the Fables, however, dates back, if legendary history is correct, to the sixth century before Christ.
Aesop is said to have been a Greek slave eho lived between 620 and 560 B.C. One would hardly expect a slave to become famous, or that several thousand years after his death his name would become a household word.
But Aesop must have been a clever and witty man. It was his wit and cleverness that inspired his second master to give him his freedom.
Legend states that Aesop was ugly, small and misshapen, and that he was once hurled off a cliff, but we are not told whether it was because of his politics or his deformaty.
Such picturesque stories about Aesop may or may not be true; never the less they have persisted. Today we enjoy Aesop for his apparently simple tales which are in reality subtle parodies on the ways of tyrants and simple men.
It would be hard to imagine what our English speech would be without recourse to the "early bird," to the "fox and the sour grapes," in which anyone can see himself, or to any of the fables which present human weaknesses in a way that can be recognized by even the very young reader.
Today there are very few people who do not know Aesop's Fables and who do not refer to one or more of them in their daily conversation.
In this collection of fables, the best-known ones are included for your pleasure and enjoyment.
