About M. C. Gaines
M. C. Gaines (1894-1947), originally a teacher and public school principal, was a pioneering figure in the creation of the modern comic book. He was the founder of EC Comics and a co-founder of DC Comics.
In 1933, he devised the first four-color saddle-stitched newsprint pamphlet, a precursor to the color comics format that became the standard for the American comic book industry. He was co-publisher of All-American Publications, a seminal comic book company that introduced such enduring fictional characters as Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Hawkman.
M. C. (Max) Gaines went on to found Educational Comics, producing the series Picture Stories from the Bible, which sold over one million copies when it was first published in the 1940s, and Picture Stories from American History.
Educational Comics later became known as EC Comics. After Max Gaines’s death in a motor-boat accident in 1947, his son, William M. Gaines, became head of the company and later founded Mad Magazine.
Max Gaines’s editions of Picture Stories from the Bible ... in Full-Color Comic-Strip Form have been republished, in hardcover editions on good quality paper, by Scarf Press as separate Old Testament and New Testament editions. The Old Testament/Hebrew Bible edition was published in 1979 and the New Testament edition in 1980.
