About Esther Hershenhorn
Chicagoan Esther Hershenhorn spends her days doing what she loves and loving what she does!
She writes children’s picture books, board books, poetry and middle grade fiction, teaches adults how to write for children at the University of Chicago’s Writer’s Studio and Chicago’s Newberry Library and coaches writers of all ages to help them tell their stories. Her titles include the picture book CHICKEN SOUP BY HEART (Simon & Schuster), a Sydney Taylor Book Award medalist, and S IS FOR STORY: A WRITER’S ALPHABET (Sleeping Bear Press), the book she wished she had when she was six and knew she wanted to someday be an author. Her newest book TXTNG MAMA TXTNG BABY (Sleeping Bear Press), inspired by her grandson-in-utero, uses child-friendly emoticons and tunefully-arranged familiar text messages to bring today’s baby’s Digital World to the best hand-held device of all: the baby board book! A former classroom teacher, journalist and freelance educational writer, Esther posts with five other children’s book authors who also teach writing at the group blog www.teachingauthors.com. A life-long advocate for children’s books and their creators, Esther served on the Board of Advisors of The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and is a Regional Advisor Emeritus.
