About Emily Hunter

Emily began her career in advocacy journalism in 2006 after she had the opportunity to collaborate in a hour-long special on her Sea Shepherd activism for City TV Toronto called “Antarctica: Sea Shepherd Expedition.” She later graduated with a BA in Journalism from the University of Toronto Scarborough. In 2009, Emily became the eco-blogger for THIS Magazine, a Canadian independent magazine, and wrote the highest viewed blog of the year.
That same year she became the eco-correspondent for MTV News Canada reporting on environmental issues. At MTV Canada, Emily co-directed and co-produced the first TV-documentaries of the show IMPACT, a current event series on topics that affect MTV viewers. She hosted four shows, including: “Tar Sands Investigation” (aired December 2009), “Inside the Protest” (aired July 2010), “Mexican Standoff,” and “G20: One Year Later.” Her second show “Inside the Protest” on the G20 Toronto protests captured the number one network position amongst all Canadian & US non-sport specialty networks on the first nigh of airing (July 9, 2010).
In 2011, Emily released her first book titled The Next Eco-Warriors as editor and author, published by Red Wheel/Weiser in the United States and S. Fischer in Germany. The book was a collection of short stories by a new generation of environmental activists. Following the book’s release, Emily became an international speaker on youth environmental activism; including presenting at TEDxUTSC in 2013 on the term she coins “Activism 2.0.”
Currently, Emily is developing her first feature-length documentary film on the subject of her book, tentatively called “Youth Revolution.”
