About Cale Kenney
Cale Kenney is the author of "Have Crutch Will Travel: The Adventures of a Modern Day Calamity Jane" and owner of Tell Tale Publishing.A Boston native, Cale earned her B.A. from UMass Amherst in 1975. After "losing my heart to the mountains" in 1974, she moved to the Fraser River Valley in Colorado in 1977. There, she taught skiing to amputees from Children's Hospital in Denver, while training and qualifying for the US Disabled Ski Team. In 1979, she became the Woman's National Three-Track Ski Champion and in 1980, competed in the Winter Olympic Games for the Disabled in Geilo, Norway. After a knee injury sidelined her skiing career days before the World Championship Games in Switzerland in 1982, she had a comeback in 1983, winning two silver medals at the US Nationals in Squaw Valley, CA, before retiring from racing. She continued skiing until 1999, when an overuse injury of her upper extremities required she use a power wheelchair.
Cale has worked as a reporter, weekly columnist and sports editor for the Winter Park Manifest, and as a freelance writer for magazines including "Mobility," "Powder Magazine," "Alpenglo" Magazine, ESPN's "TV Sports" and "Women's Sports". In 1994, she became sole proprietor of Tell Tale Publishing, and launched the literary zine, "Howlings: Wild Women of the West," publishing over 100 unique womenÂ’s voices from 1994 to 1997.
Cale currently resides in Denver and has promoted "Have Crutch Will Travel" in Colorado and Massachusetts during 2003 and 2004 with readings in the Denver Metro Area, Boulder, the Fraser Valley, Fort Collins and Boston. In her dynamic reading performances, she will share humorous stories and personal reflections at more upcoming events in 2004 and 2005.
