The concept of mentoring has taken hold in the daily lives of American citizens, gaining traction in every facet of youth culture, and spreading like a well-knit network to every state in the union and to numerous countries around the globe. The phenomenal growth of mentoring in California over the past decade has been a relatively simple path with periodic wake-up calls. Mentoring is a brilliant idea whose time has come, and it s ready to flourish. California experienced an enormous growth curve in the early 90 s as a result of Governor Pete Wilson s leadership. In 1991, Pete appointed Andy California s drug czar. In addition, he also had him chair the Governor s Drug Policy Council. The Council was looking at all the various prevention efforts dealing with the four major social epidemics teenage pregnancy, gang involvement, educational failure, drug and alcohol abuse and it appeared from a yearlong meta-analysis, unequivocally, that the federal, state, and local governments had spent hundreds of billion of dollars over the previous thirty years on remedial efforts that did not work. These included talking to kids, offering slogans, and churning out various PR and media efforts to mitigate these four social epidemics. All the research indicated very little to nothing had been accomplished. However, through the meta-analysis, a very positive direction appeared, supported by very strong research, that mentoring- being involved with kids and holding aspiration for them- had wonderful collateral improvement in their lives. Included in this book is a forward from George Lucas and a training guide for mentors by Jay Smink.
