Called for Life: How Loving Our Neighbor Led Us into the Hea

What an amazing book about the true life story of a doctor who not only treated ebola patients....but he became an ebola patient himself. Dr. Brantly starts off by briefly discussing how he and his wife met, got to know one another, and got married. Shortly after he leads us on their journey as they head off to follow their calling as medical missionaries in Liberia. Of course, when he started down this path, he never thought he'd end up in the middle of the biggest ebola outbreak in history. With Christ-like love and compassion he cares for those suffering horribly from this dreaded disease. He takes you into the heart of the outbreak and brings home the awful physical realities of what those struck with ebola suffer through. His love and compassion for his patients shines through in his writing. Seeing countless patients die a tortured death would be traumatic enough. Yet, the dreaded realization that he had contracted this deadly disease just compounds the horror of it all. Dr. Brantly does a great job of sharing how his body is ravaged by the disease as he's quarantined in his house in Liberia. His wife shares the emotional turmoil that she goes through as she anxiously waits to see his fate from half a world away in the U.S.
What's so heart touching about this book is to see how Dr. Brantly holds onto his faith in God as he suffers through what must have been one of the scariest, most traumatic events of his life. He continues to love and trust in God even as his body goes through what must seem like "the valley of the shadow of death". He displays dignity and faith even as the deadly ebola disease ravages his body.
